A disposable is empty when the e-liquid is gone, and the device gives three different signals for three different problems: no vapor with a charged battery (empty), no vapor with a dead light (flat battery), and a burnt taste with vapor (the last of the liquid, or a dry wick). 70 of the 93 disposables in the Vaperan catalog have a screen that shows the level outright; this page covers both the screen models and the ones that make you work it out.
Models with a screen
The e-liquid bar or percentage on the screen is the answer. When it reads empty, or the bar is gone and the device still fires, there is nothing left to vaporize; the battery may show plenty of charge, which confuses people into charging an empty device. The vapes with screens guide lists every model and what its display shows.
Models without a screen: the signs in order
- The flavor fades, then turns harsh or burnt. With a few puffs of liquid left, the wick cannot stay saturated; each puff tastes thinner and then scorched. This is the usual end-of-life signal. Stop at the first burnt puff; there is nothing to gain by pushing on (why a vape tastes burnt).
- Vapor thins out even on a full charge. If you charged it and the LED shows normal and the puffs are weak and getting weaker, it is the liquid, not the battery.
- The light blinks when you draw, on a charged device. Some models blink to signal low e-liquid; others blink only for low battery. Charge it first; a blink that continues on a charged device means empty.
- Days versus capacity. Divide the capacity by your daily use: a 10 to 40 mL tank at about 1 mL a day is that many days. If the device is well past its arithmetic, it is finished. The how long disposables last guide has the per-model figures at three rates.
- The sound and the weight. Unreliable. A heavy disposable with a large battery feels the same full or empty, and gurgling means condensation, not liquid left.
Empty, flat, or blocked? Three quick tests
| What you see | Likely cause | Test |
|---|---|---|
| No vapor, no light | Flat battery | Charge 20 minutes and try again (if it will not charge) |
| No vapor, light comes on | Empty, or airflow blocked | Open the airflow, clear the mouthpiece; if it still gives nothing, it is empty |
| Vapor but burnt | Last of the liquid, or a dry wick after a hard pull | Rest it 10 minutes, take one gentle puff; still burnt means empty |
| Weak vapor, charged, not burnt | Running low, or boost mode off | Check the mode; expect the burnt taste within a day |
When it is empty
Do not try to open or refill it; sealed disposables are not designed for it and the wick is spent anyway. Hand it in rather than binning it: how to dispose of a vape. If a new device is empty or dead on arrival it is a warranty case (warranty).
Questions
How do I know when my disposable vape is empty?
On a screen model, the e-liquid bar reads empty. Without a screen: the flavor fades and turns burnt while the battery is charged, or the device gives no vapor although its light comes on and the airflow is clear.
Why does my vape blink when it is not empty?
Blinking usually means low battery; charge it. If it keeps blinking on a full charge, the device is reporting low e-liquid or a fault.
Can a disposable vape run out of liquid before the battery dies?
Yes, and on rechargeable disposables it always should: the battery is topped up as needed and the liquid is the thing that runs out.
Is it bad to keep puffing an empty vape?
It tastes burnt because the wick is scorching; there is no liquid to deliver. Stop at the first burnt puff.
