MTL (mouth-to-lung) means you draw vapor into your mouth and then inhale, like a cigarette: a tight draw, a small amount of vapor, higher nicotine. DTL (direct-to-lung) means you inhale straight into the lungs: an open draw, a lot of vapor, low nicotine. The device, the coil and the e-liquid all have to match the style, and the manufacturer’s specifications tell you which style a device is built for.
How to read the specs
| MTL | DTL | |
|---|---|---|
| Coil resistance | about 0.8 to 1.2 Ω and above | below about 0.6 Ω (“sub-ohm”) |
| Power | roughly 8 to 20 W | roughly 40 W upward |
| Airflow | tight, often adjustable down to a pinhole | wide open |
| E-liquid | nicotine salt, 20 to 50 mg (2 to 5%) | freebase, 0 to 6 mg |
| Puff | short, cigarette-like | long, deep |
| Typical device | disposables, pen-style pod systems | box mods with a sub-ohm tank, high-power pod mods |
Between the two sits “restricted DTL” (RDTL): coils around 0.5 to 0.7 Ω at 20 to 35 W, a medium draw and medium nicotine. Many pod kits ship one MTL pod and one RDTL pod so you can choose.
Which catalog devices are which
- Disposables are MTL or restricted DTL. All 93 disposables we stock are draw-activated; 80 of them publish 5% nicotine, a strength that is always nicotine salt and only comfortable with a tight draw. Models with adjustable airflow open toward RDTL.
- Pod systems sit in the middle. Of the 60 refillable kits whose box contents list coil resistances, 24 ship coils whose lowest resistance is between 0.6 and 0.99 Ω (MTL to restricted DTL, the typical pod), 2 ship coils of 1 Ω or more only (MTL), and 34 ship at least one coil below 0.6 Ω (a true DTL option).
- Box mod kits are DTL. The 22 box mod kits reach 225 W at the top of the range and nearly all ship only sub-ohm mesh coils in a tank; used with freebase e-liquid at 3 or 6 mg. See SMOK box mod kits and kits that take 18650 cells.
Kits that do both
6 kits in the catalog list a coil below 0.6 Ω and a coil of 0.8 Ω or more, so one device covers MTL and DTL with a pod or coil change:
| Kit | Coils listed | Output | Pod or tank | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LVE Orion 2 40W | 0.4 Ω and 0.8 Ω | 5-40W | 4.5mL | $34.99 |
| SMOK NOVO 6 ULTRA | 0.4 Ω and 0.8 Ω | 5 – 40W | 3mL | $25.99 |
| UWELL Caliburn G3 Pro 35W | 0.4 Ω and 0.9 Ω | MAX 35W | 3mL | $19.99 |
| Vaperz Cloud PIXEL AIO 60W Boro | 0.4 Ω and 0.8 Ω | 5-60W | not published | $69.99 |
| Vaporesso LUXE XR MAX 2 | 0.2 Ω and 0.8 Ω | 5-80W | 5mL | $39.99 |
| Vaporesso XROS 4 Nano 30W | 0.4 Ω and 0.8 Ω | 1-30W | 2mL | $21.99 |

Choosing
- Coming from cigarettes or disposables: MTL. A draw-activated pod system with a 0.8 to 1.2 Ω pod and nicotine salt at the strength you are used to (nicotine strength guide).
- Want more vapor and flavor at lower nicotine: DTL, which means a sub-ohm coil, a device that can supply 40 W or more, and freebase liquid at 3 to 6 mg. Do not put 5% nicotine salt in a sub-ohm coil; the dose per puff is far too high and it is harsh.
- Not sure: one of the kits above with both pod types.
Questions
What does MTL mean on a vape?
Mouth-to-lung: vapor is drawn into the mouth first, then inhaled, through a tight airflow and a coil of around 1 Ω at low power, with nicotine-salt e-liquid.
What does DTL mean?
Direct-to-lung: vapor is inhaled straight into the lungs through an open airflow and a sub-ohm coil at 40 W or more, with low-strength freebase e-liquid.
Are disposable vapes MTL or DTL?
MTL, or restricted DTL on models with the airflow opened. Their 5% nicotine salt is designed for a tight draw.
Can I use nicotine salt in a DTL tank?
Not at 5%. Sub-ohm tanks are for freebase liquid at 0 to 6 mg; 50 mg salt in one is unpleasant and delivers far too much nicotine per puff.
