Nicotine salt and freebase nicotine are the same molecule in two chemical forms. Freebase is nicotine on its own, as it has been used in e-liquid since the start; salt is nicotine combined with an acid (usually benzoic acid), which lowers the liquid’s pH. The practical difference: salt is smooth at high strengths and freebase is not, which is why every 5% disposable is salt and every 3 mg bottle for a box mod is freebase.

Which to use

  • Disposables: already decided. 92 of the 93 disposables we stock publish a strength; the most common are 5% (50mg) (64 models), 5% (11 models), 5% (50MG) (3 models), 0.6% (6mg) (2 models) and 0.35% (2 models). The 5% liquids are nicotine salt by necessity; the few low-strength models (0.35% to 0.6%) do not state the form. The nicotine strength guide maps the labels.
  • Pod systems (71 in the catalog): salt at 20 to 50 mg in a 0.8 to 1.2 Ω pod for a cigarette-like draw, or freebase at 3 to 6 mg in a sub-ohm pod for more vapor. Never salt at 50 mg in a sub-ohm pod.
  • Box mod kits (22): freebase at 0 to 6 mg. Sub-ohm coils vaporize so much liquid per puff that salt strengths would deliver far too much nicotine and feel harsh in spite of the salt.

Moving between them

From a 5% disposable to a pod system: a 50 mg (5%) or 35 mg salt gives the same hit per puff; many people step down to 20 to 25 mg within weeks because a refillable pod wastes less. From a pod system to a box mod: 3 or 6 mg freebase; the much larger puffs make up the difference. The rule of thumb is that the nicotine per puff, not the number on the bottle, is what you feel: strength times vapor volume.

Reading the label

“5%” and “50 mg” are the same strength; percentages are weight per volume, so 5% is 50 mg per mL. Salt liquids are usually labelled “salt”, “nic salt” or “NS”; freebase is usually unlabelled or marked “freebase”. A 50 mg bottle with no “salt” on it does not exist from any serious maker, because 50 mg freebase is unusable. See the glossary for the terms.

Questions

Is nicotine salt stronger than freebase?

Not per milligram: 20 mg is 20 mg. Salt is sold at higher strengths because it stays smooth there, and it absorbs somewhat faster, so at the same strength it feels more like a cigarette.

Can I use nicotine salt in any vape?

In any MTL device with a coil of about 1 Ω or more. In sub-ohm tanks and pods it delivers too much nicotine per puff and is unpleasant; use freebase at 6 mg or less there.

Which is better for quitting cigarettes?

Many people switching from cigarettes start on salt at 20 to 50 mg in a pod system or disposable because the hit is closest to a cigarette, then step down. This is general information, not medical advice.

Are disposable vapes freebase or salt?

Salt. All 5% disposables use nicotine-salt liquid.
