Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt? Causes and Fixes

A burnt taste means the coil is heating without enough e-liquid around it. The wick scorches, and once it has, the taste usually stays. The cause is different in a disposable and in a refillable pod system, so start with the device you have.

In a disposable

• The e-liquid has run out. This is the usual cause. If the screen or window shows empty, the device is finished.
• Chain vaping. Long puffs back to back use liquid faster than the wick can soak it up. Leave a few seconds between puffs.
• Boost or pulse mode. Higher power dries the wick sooner. Switch to regular mode.
• Burnt from the first puff. On a new device this points to a fault. See the warranty page.

In a pod system or mod

• The coil was not primed. A new pod or coil needs five to ten minutes after filling for the wick to soak before the first puff.
• The pod is low. Refill before the liquid drops below the wick openings.
• Power is set too high. Each coil has a wattage range printed on it or on the box. Stay inside it.
• The coil is worn out. Coils and pods last roughly one to two weeks of regular use. Dark liquid and fading flavor are the signs. Fit a new one.
• Very sweet e-liquid. Sweeteners build up on the coil and shorten its life.

Can a burnt coil be saved?

Usually not. Once the wick is scorched the taste remains. Resting the device upright for ten minutes helps only if the wick was dry rather than burnt. In a refillable device, replace the pod or coil. In a disposable with e-liquid still visible, rest it, lower the power and take shorter puffs; if the taste stays, the device is done.

How to avoid it

1. Prime every new pod or coil before the first puff.
2. Keep the pod topped up.
3. Use the wattage range printed for the coil.
4. Pause between puffs.
5. Replace pods and coils on schedule rather than when they fail.

Stop using a device that tastes burnt. A scorched wick means the device is no longer working as designed, and the fix is a new pod, coil or device.

Why does my new pod taste burnt?
