Why choose a kit with removable cells
- Swap instead of wait. A spare charged cell replaces an empty one in seconds; a built-in battery means the device is out of action while it charges.
- The device outlives the battery. Cells wear out after a few hundred cycles; with a removable cell you replace the cell, not the kit.
- Power. The 200 W-class box mods in the table need two cells; no built-in battery of pocket size delivers that.
- The cost. Cells and an external charger are extra. For an all-day single-cell kit the price difference against a built-in-battery kit is small; for a dual-cell mod the extras add up.

Which cell to buy
- The size the kit specifies. An 18650 is 18 mm by 65 mm; a 21700 is 21 mm by 70 mm. Kits that list both usually ship an 18650 sleeve so either fits.
- A high-drain cell from a known cell maker, bought from a specialist, with a continuous discharge rating that comfortably exceeds what the kit draws at the wattage you use. Rewrapped cells with impossible mAh and amp figures are a common cause of the incidents in the news.
- Matched pairs for dual-cell mods: same make, same model, bought together, charged together, never mixed with an older cell.
- An external charger. Charging through the kit’s USB port works but is slower; the battery note on the product pages recommends an external charger for balanced charging.
Handling rules that are not optional

Only if the manufacturer lists both sizes; the cell bay is sized to the larger cell with a sleeve for the smaller one. Forcing a larger cell damages the contacts.
